Krafla
(Iceland) (1981)

1981 was the year I first found out about volcanoes. I beheld with my own bewildered eyes the latest flow, which looked like so many black fragile patches that broke with a hissing noise.I decided to follow them up and, after a few miles walk, I happened on a silvery flow which looked like a glowing foam whose angry overflows have petrified into so many waves.

1981 : the flow from the latest eruption eased itself into a black oily grease, which formed long strks in the green, drenched grass a few wandering sheep were grazing.
On the outer limit of the lava flow, I found a small cone whereof a thin black tongue darted on a few feet, licking older reddish lava flows.
