The ultimate prize was the arrival on the pit crater for, like teh notorious Agatha Christies's And then there was none, only a handful of the fans who have set off on conquering the summit of Africa, have the strength to climb beyond its 5 895 meters.
Then there were 4 of us as we began climbing from Marengu Gate, at 1800 m ; and then there were 3 leaving Kibo Hut, at 4 800 m ; and then there were 2 to climb down into the Reush crater. And then there was one left who, after exploring the pit crater, ventured into the great Eastern Icefield, the giant ice-steps which are 25 m high.

His partner gathered up his strengh in this mystical place praying Vulcano to help ahim climb back up the crater's slope and go back safely to the comfort of the Horombo shelters.
